OPEN LETTER TO NASHS MEMBERS AND ORGANIZERS
AND OTHER SADDLEBRED HORSE OWNERS
The American Saddlebred Horse Association of Australia Incorporated hereby extends an open invitation to all members and organizers of NASHS to rejoin ASHAA and have ONE united American Saddlebred Association in Australia .
It has been a dream of every committee member of ASHAA Inc. since the break-up took place, to have all American Saddlebred horses back together as one big family and under one banner. Several of our committee members have approached NASHS organisers on previous occasions. So far this has been to no avail, but we remain hopeful that common sense and the desire to see this breed thrive in Australia will eventually bring all Saddlebred breeders and owners back together.
Time is running out for some of the horses to be parent verified through DNA, as many older horses have died. We feel that it is a shame that such a small a horse breed is broken up into two associations. That so many American Saddlebred horses have not been DNA tested, and placed in the A registry where they rightfully would have belonged had they been tested. We at ASHAA Inc. know that for many horses it is still not too late. Many Saddlebred horses are already in ASHAA's A registry, and only need to be DNA tested to enable their progeny to become A registry stock. Others are eligible for A registry entry if applied for, and with DNA testing, they can be parent verified or where that is no longer possible, they can be verified against some related horses. Any non-parentage verified purebred Saddlebred can currently go into ASHAA's E registry. As siblings and other related horses are entered and DNA tested, many E registry horses will become eligible to be moved up to the A registry as time goes by.
For partbred Saddlebred horses, we introduce the little sister association:
American Saddlebred and Sporthorse Registries of Australasia Inc.
In this incorporated association, breeders who do not think DNA is important, can register purebred and partbred American Saddlebred horses which have a provable minimum 25% American Saddlebred blood in their pedigree. For any horse to go into the A registry, a DNA test must be done to prove their parentage.
The new Saddlebred Sporthorse Registry currently has introductory registration fees. The new registry is envisaged to register several classes of Saddlebred Sporthorses, for example, Saddlebred Sports Ponies, Saddlebred Sporthorses etc. It will take time to set it all up and we are open to suggestions and requests from owners and breeders.
It truly will be a great day when all American Saddlebreds will be under the same banner once again, putting personal disagreements aside and our American Saddlebred horses first.
From the Committee of ASHA Inc.

EI Levy?
The subject of an industry wide levy has been raised. It has been suggested that a levy should take the form of a one-off $100 payment for every horse registration in Australia. More details and ways you can contact politicians to have YOUR SAY ABOUT THE LEVY can be found at:

New American Saddlebred stallion for Australia:
Silvia Kutle and Romana Medlobi in WA are pleased to announce that their new stud colt 'aa Nitro' is expected to arrive in Australia in time for the 2008 breeding season. Nitro is by ra Hot Every Nite and out of Tropical Lily (a Fameous Design) and is closely related to WCH Doctor Zhivago. He is rising 3yo, black, homozygous tobiano and homozygous black and is expected to mature to 17hh.
The importation of Nitro is the culmination of several year's research of hundreds of Saddlebreds by Silvia and Romana (trading as Black Orchid Stud) to bring the very best new bloodlines and riding attributes to the Australian Saddlebred community.
Nitro is currently pending registration with ASHA and once the process is completed will be registered as a breeding stallion with ASHAA. He will stand at Black Orchid Stud in WA to a very limited book of mares. (picture coming soon)

Both the NSW and Queensland State governments today announced an end to the EI crisis. Some horse movements still require permits. But it's over!
18th February 2008
The eradication of the EI outbreak appears to be making good progress with no new cases being reported for weeks in either NSW or QLD. Most of NSW has now been declared a white zone, allowing transport of horses. Permits are still required in most cases of moving horses out of NSW or QLD. Contact the DPI in your state for more information.
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestries has a page dealing with biosecurity and horses to assist horse owners.
If you are looking to purchase a Saddlebred Horse, please check our sales listing, which is regularly updated.
When purchasing a Saddlebred Horse, always remember to sight the ASHAA registration papers. Purebred Saddlebred registration papers are blue and the information on the front includes the horse's bloodtyping or DNA reference number. Partbred Saddlebred registration papers are yellow. All registration certificates are signed by the registrar of ASHAA and have the seal of ASHAA imprinted on them. If you have questions about a Saddlebred Horse or about it's registration status, please contact the Secretary.
If you are considering purchasing a Saddlebred Horse without ASHAA registration papers, contact the Secretary to find out if the horse is eligible for registration BEFORE you purchase the horse. Registration papers from other clubs or registries do not automatically qualify a Saddlebred Horse for inclusion in ASHAA's studbook. Purebred horses must qualify for entry into our purebred A registry with correct breeding certificates, stallion return entries, proof of ownership and full parent verification through DNA testing. Imported purebred horses with ASHA (USA) registration papers are also eligible for registration with ASHAA.
ASHAA's A registry is the only registry in Australia which is internationally recognized through strict adherence to DNA verification rules, in line with the rules of ASHA (USA). ASHAA uses the services of the University of Queensland DNA testing laboratory to process DNA samples.
Security update: due to the widespread practice by spammers to harvest email addresses from websites, all email links have been removed from this website. Please use our Enquiry/Feedback form to contact the Secretary.

We would like to remind breeders of the importance of filling in forms correctly and completely. Every year we receive Stallion Service Returns and Registration Applications which need to be sent back to the applicant. This causes additional workload to our secretary and registrar and delays the processing of horse registrations.
We understand that all forms are not perfectly designed. And in a perfect world, forms would be so easy to fill in, that they can nearly do it themselves. But this is the real world so we need to look at all the little boxes and the labels next to them and fill the boxes in as instructed. Contrary to public opinion, forms are designed to help you gather and provide all the necessary information, they are not created to annoy you. It takes less time (yours and ours) to read the instuctions properly and fill the form in once and completely than to do it carelessly and several times over.
For example, breeding dates on SSR's and Registration Application forms...
For hand service or artificial insemination, you must insert ALL the actual dates of service or insemination.
For paddock service, you must insert the actual date the stallion went into the paddock with the mare and the date the stallion was taken out. This is important, as service could have taken place on any day during that period. A single date is not acceptable. If the stallion went in and out on the same day, this must be shown. It is also not acceptable to write "October - November", as this could translate to "1.Oct - 1.Nov" OR "31.Oct to 30.Nov" which are two separate months!
Remember, breeding dates allow the registrar to confirm that a foal is the result of a particular mating, and it is vitally important that you, as breeder or stallion owner, provide accurate information.
Another example, ownership transfer dates....
It is important to remember that the breeder of a foal (which will be shown on the registration certificate) is the owner of the dam at the time of breeding. If the mare is sold before the foal is registered, Section C of the foal's registration application (transfer of unregistered horse) must the signed by the mare owner. No transfer fee is be payable for this.
If a mare is sold in foal or with foal at foot, ensure that the ownership transfer date on the mare's registration papers matches the Section C transfer date shown on the registration application of the foal.

SUSPENSION OF COLLECTION OF NEW HAIR SAMPLES FOR DNA TESTING DUE TO EQUINE INFLUENZA
The Australian Equine Genetics Research Centre is advising all Horse Breed Societies and Associations to contact all members and immediately suspend the collection of new hair samples for DNA testing, until further notice.
This advice is being given to minimise the movement of people between horses and reduce the possible spread of Equine Influenza.
This only applies to the collection of NEW hair samples. Hair samples that have already been collected are biologically secure and can be sent to the AEGRC for testing in the normal way.
This applies to all states and territories and follows the advice from the Department of Primary Industries (NSW) and the Australian Stud Book.
Thank you for your cooperation.
