The American Saddlebred Horse Association of Australia Inc (ASHA of A) Studbook was established in 1977 with the first purebred horses imported from the USA and includes all other purebred imports to Australia since that time.
In 1996 ASHA (USA) - keepers of the founding American Registry Studbook (est.1891) - initiated compulsory blood-typing for purebred horses. In line with industry practice, ASHA of Australia complied with the deadline for recognition of Australian bred Purebred horses registered with them by adopting the international standard: Thus protecting the birthright of the Australian bred horses and considerable investment of owners, as export to the USA of purebred ASHA of A, Australian (A) Studbook registered horses for competition, showing, breeding or sale became possible.
The ASHA of Australia is staffed by voluntary workers who strongly encourage and support other owners in all disciplines, toward what should always remain the uncomplicated joy of owning and sharing personal experiences of the American Saddlebred Horse, whether Purebred or Partbred. In this spirit, ASHA of Australia now introduce the "Appendix Australian Registry" (also referred to as "E" registry). Applications to this category will be considered for any horse issued with a Purebred American Saddlebred registration certificate by another legally registered association or society showing pedigree derived from the ASHAA (A) Studbook.
DNA testing is compulsory. For successful applications, if in time a chain of DNA can be established by exclusion to two (A) Studbook parents, upgrade to the Studbook may be applied for. For full details contact the Secretary of ASHA of Australia.
Today in Australia, with over 900 horses currently registered by breeders from all States of Australia, the ASHA of A Inc stands alone in protection of the purity of the breed and connection to the founding USA source, setting the industry benchmark for discerning breeders, buyers and enthusiasts of exceptional American Saddlebred Horses.
